Crystal Swain-Bates, a trailblazing children’s book author and the visionary founder of Goldest Karat Publishing, has made it her mission to promote early childhood literacy and fill the diversity gap in children’s literature. Frustrated by the lack of representation in the market, Crystal took matters into her own hands and established a publishing company that has become a beacon of hope for young black readers.
Having built a loyal following among parents, educators, and young readers seeking diverse stories, Goldest Karat Publishing has garnered widespread recognition, with its books being featured in prestigious publications like Forbes, CNN, and Essence, as well as appearing on television shows such as Shaquille O’Neal’s “Game Plan” and a nationally televised Amazon commercial.
Goldest Karat Publishing’s focus on early childhood literacy is rooted in the belief that exposure to diverse stories from a young age is crucial for fostering a love for reading and promoting healthy cognitive development. This is particularly important given that only 37% of fourth-graders in the United States read at or above a proficient level, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress.
Under Crystal’s leadership, Goldest Karat Publishing remains dedicated to creating a world where every child sees themselves represented in the stories they read, setting the foundation for a lifetime of learning and success.

Shouneqa James is an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner who has dedicated her career to educating and advocating for others. Born and raised in Dania Beach, Florida, Shouneqa was inspired by her mother to pursue a career in nursing from a young age. After graduating from High School in 2000, she was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a metabolic condition that causes weight gain, irregular cycles, infertility, high blood pressure, depression, and an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
Shouneqa briefly attended Bethune Cookman College before returning to her hometown and graduating from Broward College as a Registered Nurse in 2003. During her college years, she grappled with PCOS, as many physicians were not knowledgeable about how to treat the condition. After numerous doctor appointments and various medications, she undertook her own research to understand the root causes of PCOS and was determined to heal herself.
In 2018, Shouneqa graduated from Chamberlain College of Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner. Since then, she has successfully regulated her cycles, lost 50 pounds, and adopted a healthier lifestyle. Through extensive coursework and research on holistic and natural treatments, she has become adept at educating women on how to heal their bodies with nutrition, supplementation, and exercise.
In 2018, Shouneqa founded Pocketbook Cysters, a platform dedicated to educating women about PCOS, hygiene, and other women’s health issues. She expanded her initiatives by formulating body butters and soaps that pose a low risk to the endocrine system. In 2023, she established Enlove Wellness, a business offering natural treatments for PCOS, including laboratory workups, dietary and supplement recommendations, and exercise plans. Enlove Wellness also provides IV hydration, physicals, laboratory services, and vitamin shots. The “Embracing Womanhood” consultation educates women aged 18-26 about their bodies, menstrual cycles, abnormalities, and what to expect as they age.
For the past 17 years, Shouneqa has been an active member of the Tamara James Foundation, which provides health services and food assistance to vulnerable community members. She has also supported various organizations in their charitable efforts, often working diligently behind the scenes.
She has consistently transformed her challenges into opportunities, turning defeat into determination, pain into passion, and struggle into success.

FOR THE FEW Intimates is a sustainable lingerie line that celebrates and empowers Black and brown women by creating underwear with Black women at the forefront of every decision. Our range of nude shades, designs, and marketing strategies are redefining the concept of nude and what it means to wear comfortable underwear.
Our founder, Kasi Nayles, is a proud Howard University alumna who also holds a masters degree from the University of Arts in London—both of which led her to create FOR THE FEW Intimates as a means to bridge one of the many gaps which exist in the fashion industry. To celebrate Black and brown women’s shade diversity, Kasi drew from her own family and named FTF’s nude shades after the women who have had the greatest impact on her life—her mother and her aunts.
We’re not just making underwear, we’re creating a space where women feel recognized, celebrated, and empowered through intentionally designed, ethically made lingerie.
We believe every woman deserves a good pair of nude underwear.
